Regular cannabis seeds.

Regular cannabis seeds grow into male and female plants, roughly half and half. You need them to make your own seeds, or to choose a mother plant from a range of plants. Compare by price per seed, and remember that only about half your seeds will flower.

Who still grows regular seeds

If feminized seeds give you nearly all female plants, why would anyone buy regular seeds? Because some growers want the males, or want the full range of plants a strain can produce.

  • Making your own seeds. You need a male to pollinate a female. Regular seeds give you both.
  • Keeping a mother plant. From a pack of regular seeds you grow several females, pick the best one and keep it as a mother for cuttings.
  • Finding a standout plant. Plants from one pack differ. A bigger pack of regular seeds gives you more plants to choose from.
  • Preserving a classic. Many older strains are mainly sold as regular seeds.

Regular compared with feminized

Regular Feminized
Female plants About half Nearly all
Males About half, removed or used for breeding Rare
Price per seed Usually lower Usually higher
Good for Seeds, mother plants, selecting Harvesting buds
Common flowering type Mostly photoperiod Photoperiod and autoflower

Comparing prices fairly

A regular seed often costs less than a feminized one. But only about half your seeds become females, so the price per female plant is roughly double the seed price. When you compare, multiply the regular price per seed by two before you hold it against a feminized seed. Comparing prices fairly.

Pack size matters too. Regular seeds are often sold in packs of 10 or more, because you need enough plants to find good females and a male. On buxbeans, small packs (under 10) and large packs (10 to 25) show by default. See price per seed.

Growing regular seeds

Some growers also find regular plants more varied from seed to seed. That's a drawback if you want uniform plants, and an advantage if you're looking for one special plant.

Telling males from females

The sex shows when the plant starts to flower. Males grow small round sacs that hang from the joints of the stem; females grow white hairs from small teardrop-shaped calyxes. Check every day once flowering starts: an open male sac releases pollen within days.

Plan for more plants

Start more seeds than you want plants. If you want four females, start eight to ten regular seeds, then remove or separate the males. Leave room in your tent for that first, crowded stage.

Photoperiod or autoflower

Most regular seeds are photoperiods. That suits breeding and mother plants: you control when the plant flowers, and a mother plant needs to stay in the growing stage for months. Regular autoflowers exist but are rare. Not sure which suits you? Autoflower or photoperiod.
