Filters we used, and why

• Feminized: every seed grows into a female plant, the one that flowers, so you don't need to spot and remove males. Feminized or regular.
• Packs bulk: more than 25 seeds in one pack. Bigger packs, cheaper seeds.

Who bulk packs are for

Most home growers need a few seeds at a time, so buxbeans shows small packs (under 10 seeds) and large packs (10 to 25) by default. A bulk pack holds more than 25 seeds. It makes sense when you plant many seeds in one season, and that's mostly the guerrilla grower:

• Several spots at once. Spreading plants over a few hidden places means one discovery doesn't cost the whole harvest.
• Losses on the way. Slugs, snails, mice, deer and dry spells take seedlings you can't watch every day.
• Sowing extra. Many guerrilla growers sow two or three seeds per spot and keep the strongest.

Grow five plants a year at home? Then a bulk pack is a false saving: feminized seeds in small and large packs are the better buy.

Why bulk doesn't keep

Seeds age, even when stored well. Each year fewer of them sprout, and the ones that do sprout more slowly.

So buying 25 seeds each of four strains to grow five plants a year leaves you with old seeds that won't come up. Buy bulk for the season you'll sow it in.

Store them well until then

Keep seeds cool, dark, dry and sealed until you sow them: an airtight jar in a cool cupboard, or in the fridge in a sealed, dry container. Let a cold jar reach room temperature before you open it, so no condensation forms inside.

The saving only counts if you sow the seeds. Compare the price per seed, not the pack price, and compare the same seeds across shops: a bulk pack at one shop can cost more per seed than a large pack at another. Bigger packs, cheaper seeds.

Bulk on buxbeans means more than 25 seeds, the most a home grower would buy. Trade bulk for professional growers runs to thousands of seeds and is a different market; we don't cover it.

Choosing seeds for a guerrilla grow in bulk

Buying many seeds of one strain makes the choice matter more. Look for:

1. Easy: plants that cope without you. Grow specs.
2. A short flowering time: a harvest before the autumn rain.
3. Small or average height: plants that stay out of sight.
